Community Archaeology & Public Engagement

Community archaeology is thriving, it enables a wide range of people to get directly involved in the preservation, investigation and enjoyment of their local heritage in a constructive and meaningful way. Community groups will play an increasingly important role in the future of archaeology and, as such, it is vital that the archaeological community develops the skills needed to work closely with this growing body of individuals.

Committed to community engagement

Northern Archaeological Consultancy Ltd has been committed to community engagement since the company’s inception. We have had the privilege of welcoming communities to our excavation sites since 1998. We initially invited members of the public onto our sites as visitors to see what had been unearthed, then expanded into visiting schools and community groups to give talks on our excavations and discoveries in their area. In 2016 we designed and ran a very successful community excavation for Historic Royal Palaces at Hillsborough Castle, County Down and in September 2019 we completed another successful community led excavation at the Scheduled Monument of Arney Fort, County Fermanagh for the Cuilcagh to Cleanish: A Great Place Project.
